Day 1 - Our overland excursion to Victoria Falls and Game Reserve in Zambia - 10th April

Firstly a big happy birthday to my sister, Carolyn… 21 again!!  Haha  I hope you enjoyed your day. Xo

We had to meet on the dock at 5.15am to be escorted to Capetown airport for our two hour flight to Johannesburg.  All went well and all nine of us were on time.  It was still very dark and a bit on the cool side so a jacket was required.  We had a wakeup call for 4.30am!!! and had stored away some yoghurt in our fridge for our breakfast as room service doesn’t start to 6.30am.

Our group consists of Ken an Aussie travelling on his own, Sheila a Welsh lady travelling on her own, Jim from Mexico and John from Canada travelling together, Matt from Finland travelling on his own and Judith and Mike, married, from England.  This is Judith and Mike’s 5th full world cruise in a row and have booked for next year’s full world cruise already and after that they are having a break!

All were very nice people and easy to get along with.

On arriving at Johannesburg we were met by our tour representative and transferred to our next flight to Zambia.  The flight time was approximately 2 hours.

On arriving in Livingstone, Zambia we were met by a representative from Sussi and Chuma Safari Game Lodge where we will spend the next 2 nights.

The drive to the Lodge was around 30 to 40 minutes through the township of Livingstone which is quite small.

At the lodge we were met with a welcoming drink and a nice cold washer.

After settling into our “cabins/chalets” we were served a beautiful lunch on the banks of the Zambezi river.

We met at 4pm to go on a safari drive in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National park where we saw a variety of animals.  On sunset we made our way to a clearing on the banks of the Zambezi for champagne which was very pleasant.

On arrival back at the Lodge there was an open fire raging at the bar on the banks of the river which was great place to relax with pre-dinner drinks.

Dinner was served around 8.30pm in an open air restaurant and then we all were personally escorted back to our private chalets which are access via a raised boardwalk.  Apparently the escort is to ward off snakes, spiders, monkeys and anything else lurking around.

Our chalet was extremely comfortable but not bug proof with heaps of bugs attracted to the light that the maid leaves on after turning the bed down and positioning the nets around the bed.

The bed was like sleeping on the clouds, so very comfortable and luxurious.

That’s about it for day one. Xo

Some facts:

Sussi and Chuma is named after explorer David Livingstone’s two faithful companions who carried his body all the way back to England from where he died from Malaria in Zambia

The main lodge is built on two levels perched in giant ebony trees overlooking the Zambezi river

Game to see include: elephant, impala, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, zebra, white rhino and a vast array of birds and other creepy crawlies including spiders and geckos.
